ATHENS, Ga. -- Play continued Friday at the 2005 NCAA Womenís Tennis Championships at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex in Athens. Stanford, Clemson, Texas and Florida each stamped tickets to Saturday's semifinals.
Action begins at 11 am as top-seeded Stanford takes on 12th-seeded Clemson, followed by 11th-seeded Texas and second-seeded Florida squaring off at 3 pm.
Defending national champion Stanford recorded a 4-1 victory against Georgia in the morning match, as play was moved indoors due to inclement weather. The two teams finished doubles and played all the singles matches in the Lindsey Hopkins Indoor Courts. Stanford has now reached the semifinals at the NCAAs in 22 of the last 23 years.
Clemson advanced to face Stanford after a 4-1 win against conference foe North Carolina. Clemson claimed the doubles point and won the top three singles matches en route to their second straight appearance in the NCAA semifinals. Doubles play was completed just before the rain came, and the two teams endured a two hour and 56 minute delay before resuming play. A 56-minute rain delay occurred late in singles play as well.
The other semifinal will feature second-ranked Florida - a 4-2 winner against Southern California. Gator Jennifer Magley clinched the victory at No. 1 singles to send Florida to the national semifinals for the 17th time in the last 19 years. Florida's Zerene Reyes won her 100th career doubles match, making her just the fifth Gator to post 100 career wins in singles and doubles.
The Longhorns won three singles matches in straight sets to advance to the NCAA semifinals for the first time since 1997 with a 4-2 win against third-seeded Kentucky. Texas used a 9-8 (7) victory at No. 2 doubles to clinch the doubles point, and Lara Maurer put the match in the books with a win at No. 5 singles.
This year's tournament marks the first time since the NCAA field expanded to 64 teams in 1999 that two double-digit seeds have reached the semifinals (No. 11 Texas and No. 12 Clemson).
