Doubles Tournament
Notes

Stanford places duo of doubles teams in semifinals again
Stanford's doubles teams of Alice Barnes and Erin Burdette and Amber Liu and Anne Yelsey both advanced to Friday's semifinals, marking the fourth time the Cardinal has supplied half of the final four teams in the draw. In 2001, Stanford's duos of Laura Granville and Gabriela Lastra lost in the championship match, while Lauren Barnikow and Lauren Kalvaria fell in the semfinals. In 1996, Cardinal pairs of Julie Scott and Kim Shasby and Ania Bleszynski and Katie Schlukebir both lost in the semifinals. In 1990, Stanford provided both teams in the championship match, with Meredith McGrath and Teri Whitlinger defeating Sandra Birch and Debbie Graham, 4-6, 7-5, 6-2. Stanford now has supplied 12 doubles semifinalist teams in the 24-year history of the NCAA Tennis Championships.

Burdette does better as unseeded doubles performer
Stanford senior Erin Burdette, one of the nation's top double players during her collegiate career, has advanced to the NCAA semifinals for the first time ever. As a freshman in 2002, Burdette and Lauren Barkinow were unseeded but advanced to the quarterfinals. In 2003 and 2004, Burdette and Barnikow were the top-seeded team in the NCAA draw but lost in the quarterfinals and first round, respectively.

Cohen lone remaining in both singles and doubles
Northwestern's Audra Cohen is the only player still alive in the singles and doubles draws -- a first since 2002. In 2002, Stanford's Gabriela Lastra and Erin Burdette and Florida's Jessica Lehnhoff all made it to the semis in both singles and doubles. Only two players have won both the singles and doubles titles in the same year -- Keri Phebus of UCLA in 1995 and Linda Gates of Stanford in 1985.

Quotes

Amber Liu and Anne Yelsey, Stanford
Amber Liu:
"We had very few unforced errors and we moved well out there. We covered the court well and Anne is solid at the net."

Anne Yelsey:
"We played them in April in a dual match and we squeak it out 9-8. Today we played much better but they had a few injuries to deal with and Riza (Zalameda) had a long singles match that went three sets."

No. 3 Megan Bradley and Audrey Banada, Miami
Audrey Banada:
"I think we really beat ourselves. Not to take anything away from them, but we just played sloppy and made way too many errors. We had some chances and just couldn't convert anything.

"It was just one of those days."

No. 2 Audra Cohen and Cristelle Grier, Northwestern
Audra Cohen:
"It feels awesome to be in both the singles and doubles semis. There's nothing better at this point. (Having three freshmen) is awesome too because it shows that we are playing very well very early in our careers.

"(Playing in both semis) is hard but as long as we keep it under control I'll be fine. I figured out how to keep my back spasms under control. My stamina is holding up just fine also."

Cristelle Grier:
"We started a little slow, trying to figure out a gameplan on how to beat them. Once we came up with one, it was really hard for them to find a chink in our armor. We dictated a lot of the points very well.

"After a long match yesterday, it was nice to have a pretty quick one today."

Ana Cetnik and Story Tweedie-Yates, TCU
Ana Cetnik:
"I was giving 110% today because I knew that Story [Tweedie-Yates] was probably going to be tired from the tough singles match she played this morning. I did my best to stay positive and keep her pumped up for our match.

Story Tweedie-Yates:
"Ana [Cetnik] was helping to motivate me today. She was just killing the ball out there so I just wanted to keep pace. I was feeding a lot off of her positive energy. Although I played at Stanford, I haven't played with Erin [Burdette] and I only played with Alice [Barnes] one time in a doubles tournament."

No. 4 Daniela Bercek and Riza Zalameda, UCLA
Riza Zalameda:
"They played really well today. We didn't play our game today, but give them credit they took advantage of it.

"I just wrapped my leg today because it felt a little sore after the singles. It's not an injury just more a precautionary thing. It's obviously not a big deal since I took it off half-way through the match and still moved fine. It was just cumbersome out there on the court.

Alice Barnes and Erin Burdette, Stanford
Alice Barnes:
"We played well today I thought. We were riding a lot of momentum into this match after beating the No. 1 seed yesterday. I felt like we got on top early andd stayed there.

"At the beginning of the year, I think we had high confidence that we could win this tournament. We made it to the finals of the indoor tournament and felt like we could beat anybody. Then we had some problems with injuries and didn't play together for a few months during the year. Then I would say that we readjusted our goals. With Erin [Burdette] healthy and after beating Georgia yesterday I think we're confident that we can beat anybody.

"I'm one of the few players who likes to look at the draw in advance. I have looked ahead a little bit. We know who we play next. It's also good to see that the other team [Stanford's Liu and Yelsey] are on the other side of the draw. It's not like when I saw Erin for the second round of the singles tournament. That worried me because I've never beaten her in any competition friendly or otherwise."

Erin Burdette:
"We were confident after we pulled out a tough match yesterday. It really helped our confidence. It's really nice to be healthy and to be finishing out my career in my home state. It's nice having my family here since it's hard for them to make it out to the West Coast. After winning the team title, any doubles awards are just icing on the cake."
