NASHVILLE, Tenn. --- Despite a rain delay lasting the better part of the afternoon, Georgia athletes teamed up to produce another wildly successful day at the 2005 SEC Outdoor Track and Field Championship in Nashville, Tenn. on Saturday.
Patty Sylvester had the best overall individual performance of the day as she became the 2005 SEC Outdoor Champion of women's high jump, tying her personal best 5-8.75 and adding another huge 10 points for the Lady Bulldogs' team effort. She had her second PR and NCAA qualifier of the day in the long jump, leaping 19-8.00 for 10th place.
In the only event competed before heavy rain and intermittent lightning descended on the Music City, Chad McClendon put together a second-place performance in men's discus to put eight points on the board for the Bulldogs. His 178-00 mark was his eighth NCAA regional qualifier of the year in discus. Martin Maric was just behind with a 3rd-place, 176-03 finish for six points and another NCAA hurl. John Newell also competed in discus, tossing a 154-11 for 12th place.
A slew of subsequent preliminary rounds saw Georgia athletes score some of their best times of the season. Simon Ngata (4th prelim, 3:47.92) and Ian Burrell (8th prelim, 3:29.27) each produced qualifying times in the men's 1500 meters, as Ngata's was good enough for NCAAs and Burrell achieved a personal best. Natalie Picchetti qualified on the women's side, running the distance in 4:27.79 (4th prelim), just 1/100 of a second under the NCAA standard and also a personal best for the freshman.
