LEXINGTON, Ky. -- The ninth-ranked Georgia men's tennis team defeated the 19th-ranked Kentucky Wildcats Friday in a 4-3 contest. The Bulldogs (14-5, 6-3 SEC) won the doubles point and sealed the victory by winning three of six singles matches against the Wildcats (16-7, 5-4 SEC).
In doubles, Georgia won the point with victories at the second and third positions. The sophomore duo of Ricardo Gonzalez and Matias Ormaza outplayed Kentucky's Matt Emery and Marcus Sundh, 8-2, at the second position. At the No. 3 spot, the 47th-ranked junior tandem of Strahinja Bobusic and Colin Purcell beat Alex Hume and Nate Emge, 8-3, to clinch the doubles point. The third-ranked team of sophomore John Isner and junior Antonio Ruiz were upset in an 8-6 battle against 12th-ranked Jesse Witten and Tigran Martirosyan.
In singles, 68th ranked Ruiz fell to Kentucky's Witten, ranked fourth nationally, 6-4, 6-2 at the one spot. Then, at No. 5, Georgia's Bobusic lost to Martirosyan, 6-3, 6-3. To even the match at 2-2, Georgia's Isner, ranked 12th-nationally, exceeded over Hume with a final score of 6-0, 7-5 at No. 2. Giving the Bulldogs a 3-2 edge, 69th-ranked sophomore Matic Omerzel came out on top of Emge, 6-3, 7-5, at the third position. Clinching the match, Purcell outdid Emery to win at the fourth position, 6-3, 7-6. At No. 6, 83rd-ranked Ormaza was upset by Kentucky's Carey Rubin, 6-4, 6-1, to end the match at 4-3.
