A year ago Georgia gymnastics pledged $100,000 to Athens Regional Medical Center's new Breast Health Center, and on Feb. 18 the team completed that promise with a final check to the organization.
On Feb. 24, ARMC's Breast Health Center, including the Talya Vexler Dogwood Room (featured right), was dedicated. (View photos from the dedication ceremony) In 2003 Vexler was diagnosed with breast cancer. She beat the disease and has embraced her role as a breast health ambassador. She is now an assistant gymnastics coach at the University of Maryland. "The Champions Against Cancer campaign has been a labor of love by the Gym Dogs for their teammate. We are deeply moved by the genorosity of the Athens community and by the fact that although Talya is no longer competing, she is still a Gym Dog who is loved by her team, coaches and fans." -Norm and Anne Vexler "We are both excited and grateful to reach the successful culmination of the Champions Against Cancer campaign. The collective gifts of the Gym Dogs and their fans put us over the top in our quest to raise $100,000 for the Dogwood Room in the Athens Regional Breast Health Center. The winning tradition of the Gym Dogs shines through their commitment to honor former teammate and breast cancer survivor, Talya Vexler. We will carry this triumphant spirit in all of our efforts for breast health."Helene Schwartz Links:
