Eighth-ranked Georgia begins the 2005 season Friday at 5:30 p.m. when it welcomes Elon (6-0) to Foley Field. The Bulldogs were preseason ranked in the top 10 in all the major polls, a first in the history of Georgia baseball. Georgia welcomes back an array of talent including six starting position players and six of its top seven pitchers from a year ago when the Bulldogs tied for third at the College World Series. Georgia went 45-23, won a share of the SEC title and claimed the SEC Eastern Division title. The Bulldogs won the Athens Regional and swept Ga. Tech in Atlanta in the Super Regional to advance to Omaha.
Senior Sean Ruthven (7-2, 3.41 ERA in 2004) will get the start for the Bulldogs Friday and the Phoenix will counter with junior right-hander Lance Cole (2-0, 1.42 ERA in 2005).
Georgia Baseball is the oldest varsity sport on campus with a record of 1833-1362-22 in records dating back to 1886. In season openers, available records have the Bulldogs with a 63-30 mark. This is the first meeting between the Bulldogs and the Phoenix of Elon. Elon is 6-0 as they swept a three-game set from Wofford and Delware State.
