KNOXVILLE, Tenn. --- The No. 2-ranked Georgia women's golf team fired a 13-over 297 in Friday's first round of the Mercedes-Benz Collegiate Championship on Friday, leaving the Bulldogs in fourth and nine shots off the pace.
"It's not the kind of start we wanted to get off to," head coach Todd McCorkle said. "Overall, we didn't play very well, but we did get a couple of good rounds from Whitney Wade and Taylor Leon. We feel like nine shots isn't a deficit we can't make up."
Junior Whitney Wade's even-par 71 on the 5,932-yard layout at the Cherokee Country Club paced Georgia. The Bulldogs' other counting tallies were supplied by Georgia's trio of freshmen -- a 73 by Taylor Leon, a 75 by Mallory Hetzel and a 78 by Alina Lee. Senior Kelly Froelich posted an 80.
Wade started slow, with bogeys on No. 2 and No. 4. She then birdied No. 5 but gave that stroke back with a bogey at No. 10. Wade holed out an 80-yard shot for an eagle-3 on the par-5 No. 11 and then also posted at a birdie at No. 15 to move to 1-under. However, a bogey at No. 18 pushed her back to 1-over.
Wade is among three golfers tied for fourth, one shot off the 1-under 71 posted by both Whitney Frykman and Onnarin Sattayabanphot of Purdue and Amanda McCurdy of Arkansas. Leon is tied for 10th, Hetzel is tied for 19th, Lee is tied for 40th and Froelich is tied for 58th.
