ATHENS, Ga.---The Bulldog soccer team (8-3-1, 2-2-0) fell to Florida (7-3-1, 2-1-1) 2-0 at the UGA Soccer Complex on Sunday afternoon. The Gators extended their lifetime record to 14-0-1 over Georgia on the soccer field and tightened up the race in the SEC East. Florida now holds a one-point edge over the Dogs with seven points to Georgia's six.
"One of the big things today was the game within the game," said Georgia head coach Patrick Baker. "They have been playing a 4-3-3 all year but today they came out in a 3-4-3. Hopefully that was because of the play of our outside midfielders. Give Becky (Burleigh, Florida head coach) credit, she knows her team and its capabilities. That is something that we would not have been able to do with our team this early in the transition process."
While Georgia goal keeper Lauren Church had four saves on the day, Florida managed to slip a pair of goals past the Bulldog junior. The Gators tallied their first goal at the 20:43 mark after taking advantage of a Georgia handball in the penalty box. KeLeigh Hudson found the back of the net on the right side for the Gators on the ensuing penalty kick.
"We had a great start to the game," said Baker. "But then we had the handball call in the box. Maybe if that goes through, Church makes the save and the goal never happens. But as it was, they got the penalty kick and hit a nice shot."
Florida exteneded its lead to 2-0 on junior Melanie Booth's goal 10 minutes after the team's first score. The Bulldogs were unable to clear a loose ball out of the box as Booth stepped up and lofted a shot over Church's head.
"(Kristin) Garman and (Cortni) Joyner had an opportunity to clear," said Baker. "But they just couldn't do it. Booth hit an unbelievable shot. There just wasn't much we could do when we self destructed a little bit."
