ATHENS, Ga. -- The 10th-ranked Georgia men's tennis team heads to Nashville to begin play at the 2004 Southeastern Conference Tournament at the Brownlee O. Currey, Jr. Tennis Center on the campus of Vanderbilt University. The 2004 edition of the tournament begins Thursday, April 22 and will conclude with the championship match on Sunday, April 25.
The four-day event will be hosted by the Commodores for the first time since 1992, when Georgia lost to LSU 5-1 in the semifinals.
"We have mixed feelings after last weekend," said Georgia head coach Manuel Diaz, whose Bulldogs are coming off a 5-2 loss a 5-2 loss at Auburn in the regular-season finale. "We felt like we had a great opportunity (against the Tigers), and we really did not play the best match we could play at Auburn. They played well. Hopefully we can recommit ourselves for these next few matches and have a good tournament.
"I hope I have done enough to convince our team that we are going over there to win the tournament," said Diaz. "I feel like we have as good a chance as anyone to win this tournament. That does not mean we are going to have an easy road. It is going to be very close, very tight and very hard fought. The quality of tennis is going to be good all over the place. Our guys have to be ready to win three tough, hard, close matches. If we go in there with that attitude and that resilience, then we have a very good chance."
