LAS VEGAS -- Georgia sophomore Jitka Schonfeldova won a pair of matches Friday to advance to the quarterfinals of the Freeman Memorial Tennis Championships.

Up next, Schonfeldova faces the top seed in 13th-ranked Tammy Encina of Tennessee. Overall, five of the eight seeded singles players advanced in day one of the tournament held at the Fertitta Tennis Complex on the campus of UNLV. Fifth-ranked Georgia brought just three of its players to this event where action continues through the weekend.

In the first round, Schonfeldova took the first set 6-4 over North Carolina's Caitlin Collins who then retired. In the round of 16, Schonfeldova posted a 6-3,7-6 win over Florida's Nina Suvak.

Georgia's other two singles entries in the field of 32 did not fare as well. Senior Alexandra Smith won her first round match over Tennessee's Vicky Jones 7-5,7-5 but then fell to fourth-seeded Joslynn Burkett of Arizona State. Sophomore Douglas Wink dropped her opening round match to Tennessee's Sabita Maharaj. Maharaj won the first game of the opening set and then Wink retired. The Georgia duo of Wink/Schonfeldova had to default their first round doubles match too.
