Rising sophomore pitcher Will Startup is leading the Cape Cod League with a 0.36 earned run average while rising sophomore outfielder Kyle Keen has been the New England Collegiate Baseball League's top hitter all season. Rising senior Jon Armitage earned Player of the Week honors in the Cape Cod League, and he has hit four home runs to date in the wood-bat league. Keen and Armitage have played flawless defense too.
Armitage's latest blast came this past Tuesday with two outs in the top of the ninth to provide the winning margin in Wareham's 5-4 victory over Cotuit. Startup has been dominating in a setup role for the Orleans Cardinals. He has made 10 appearances covering a span of 25 innings with only five walks and 21 strikeouts. He is 0-1 with one save.
Keen, a member of the Keene (N.H.) Swamp Bats, leads the league in batting (.422), hits (43) and runs (24). Also, he has hit three home runs with 14 RBI. He is 17-for-20 in stolen base attempts and is perfect in the field in 42 total chances. Rising senior Justin Holmes, who began his summer in the Cape Cod League with Wareham, now is right behind Keen in the NECBL batting race as a member of the Newport Gulls. Holmes owns a .390 batting average with eight RBI in his first 12 games. Rising sophomore pitcher Rip Warren is playing in the NECBL as a member of the North Adams (Mass.) Steeplecats. He 1-4 with a 6.43 ERA in seven appearances including two starts.
