GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- The No. 7 Georgia Bulldogs faced the end of their season Friday as the team suffered a 4-0 loss to the No. 1 Stanford Cardinal in the quarterfinal round of the NCAA Women's Tennis Tournament at the Ring Tennis Complex in Gainesville. Georgia ended the year at 20-4 while Stanford advanced to the semis and a 24-1 record.
The No. 1 and No. 2 doubles teams in the country faced off on court one and after going down early in the set, second-ranked Agata Cioroch and Lori Grey mounted a comeback to tie up the score at 4-4. But Stanford's Lauren Barnikow and Erin Burdette demonstrated their top national billing and won the next four games and the set, 8-4. Georgia took an early lead on court three, but the Cardinal made a comeback of its own as Alexandra Smith and Douglas Wink fell to Emilia Anderson and Story Tweedie-Yates, 8-5. The No. 2 match was suspended as Stanford secured the doubles point.
