Bulldogs head to Texas for NCAAs
The Bulldogs will head to Texas this week for the 2003 NCAA Championships at the Jamail Texas Swimming Center in Austin beginning March 27. The three-day event features the top swimming and diving athletes from around the country.
Georgia has finished in the top 15 at the NCAA Championships for seven straight years, including a 10th-place finish a year ago in Athens. The Bulldogs highest finish came in 1997 when they finish 3rd.
The men have 10 swimmers and two divers competing at this year's championships. Robert Margalis was the NCAA runner-up in the 400y IM last year and also earned All-America accolades in the 500y and 1,650y freestyle. Kyle Salyards, the two-time SEC champion in the 200y breast, finished third in the event and took fifth in the 100y breast at NCAAs a year ago.
Georgia finishes second at women's NCAAs
The Lady Bulldogs won three individual titles and one relay crown en route to a second-place finish at the NCAA Championships last week in Auburn. Maritza Correia defended her titles and lowered the Georgia record in the 50y and 100y freestyle and anchored the NCAA-winning 200y freestyle relay. In her first NCAA championship meet, freshman Mary DeScenza won the 200y fly in Georgia-record time and finished second to Natalie Coughlin in the 100y fly. Sarah Poewe, Lauren Gettel, Paige Kearns, Samantha Arsenault, Neka Mabry and Julie Hardt also earned All-America honors.
