Athens, Ga. --- The No. 2-ranked Georgia Gym Dogs came through when it mattered most on Saturday night as they scored a 49.300 in the final rotation to clinch a win over No. 9 Alabama in front of 9,756 fans at Stegeman Coliseum.
For the Gym Dogs it was their second victory in as many weeks over the Crimson Tide. Juniors Chelsa Byrd and Cory Fritzinger were the stars of the evening for Georgia. Byrd won the all-around competition with a score of 39.650, the first all-around title of her career. Fritzinger earned a perfect score of 10.0 on beam, the first for a Gym Dog on the event since Kim Arnold in 1998 and the fourth in team history.
"I am really pleased with our team," said Georgia head coach Suzanne Yoculan. "You never begin the season expecting everyone to hit stride at the same time. That is why it is so important for different individuals to step it up at different times. We have accomplish this throughout the season and it takes that kind of effort to win championships."
