Rivals Georgia and Alabama square off on Saturday night, just one week after competing in the Super Six Challenge in Athens. The Gym Dogs earned the title in the first meet (197.325), while Alabama placed fourth with a 196.000.
Bama's Jeana Rice earned the all-around title as well as placing first on beam and bars.
Georgia's Chelsa Byrd and Bama's Ashley Miles were among the first-place finishers on vault and floor at the Super Six. The team win over Bama at the Super Six upped Georgia's lead in the series to 55-36-2 since 1980.
Georgia and Bama have won a combined nine national titles and are the only Southeastern Conference teams with an NCAA gymnastics championship. The programs have also combined for 23 individual national champions.
Georgia holds every SEC championship team apparatus record and three of the four NCAA marks. Alabama owns the other NCAA apparatus record. Currently, Georgia is the defending SEC champion and Alabama is defending an NCAA title.
It's rare that any teams compete on back-to-back days during the regular season, but that's exactly what Georgia did last week in the Super Six and then with a dual meet against Iowa. The long weekend didn't seem to slow the Gym Dogs down, though. For the first time a Georgia team has finished with two scores of 197 or higher in two of the first three meets of the season.
