ATHENS, Ga. --- The University of Georgia soccer team faces another difficult early season test this weekend, facing two top 20 teams within 48 hours. The Bulldogs (1-1-0) travel to Winston-Salem, N.C., for a 7 p.m. Friday match with no. 16 Wake Forest then travel back to Athens to host no. 8 Connecticut on Sunday at 2 p.m.
Georgia opened the 2002 season with a 3-2 overtime loss to Clemson, now ranked 13th, last Friday in Athens. Clemson ranked 14th in the preseason, meaning Georgia will play three teams ranked 16th or better in its first four games of the season.
Wake Forest started the season 3-0 defeating Oregon 3-0 and Oregon State 2-1 last weekend in the Florida State/Nike Invitational and posting a 5-0 win Tuesday at Elon. The Demon Deacons, not ranked in the preseason, broke into the latest NSCAA/adidas poll at no. 16.
Friday's match is a key regional match up as Wake Forest ranks third behind UNC and Clemson in the NSCAA/adidas Southeast Regional rankings and Georgia ranks eighth in the region. The Bulldogs, tied for 25th in the NSCAA/adidas preseason poll, are currently unranked in the national poll.
