The Bulldogs and Lady Bulldogs open the 2002 cross country season this weekend in Cullowhee, N.C., at the Western Carolina Invitational.

Last season at the same meet, the Bulldogs won and Lady Bulldogs placed second. Returning runners Mike Swope, Pat Gavin and Adam Tribble paced the men placing second, third and fourth, respectively. The women were led by then-senior Jackie Seibert with a second place individual finish. Kelley Hagen led the returning runners with a 21st place finish.

UGA CC looks to improve from 2001

The men's team returns each of its top five runners from a team that finished sixth at both the SEC Championships and the NCAA South Region Championships last year. With a strong base returning and talented new additions, the men's team looks for its best ever finish in the SEC and possibly its first ever trip to nationals.

On the women's squad, the Lady Bulldogs lost their top runner in Jackie Seibert, but add several newcomers that should help the squad improve upon last year's sixth place SEC finish.
