Inclement Weather Halts Play At Southern Intercollegiates
September 17, 2002 | Men's Tennis
ATHENS, Ga. --- Inclement weather ended play Friday afternoon as Georgia and Duke were on the courts during Day One of the 2002 Mens Tennis Southern Intercollegiate Scramble at the McWhorter Courts in Athens. Georgia Tech and Mississippi State were able to complete the morning match before it began raining.
The Bulldogs and Blue Devils were able to finish two doubles matches but play was suspended on the final doubles match when a light drizzle turned into heavy downpour. The six singles matches were canceled as rain did not let up. The match could not be moved indoors due to construction and the renovations to the Lindsey Hopkins Indoor facility.
Georgia and Duke split the two doubles matches played, with the Bulldogs winning at No. 1 and dropping the No. 3 match.
Mississippi State and Georgia Tech split a pair of doubles matches while the Bulldogs took three of the five singles matches in the morning session. At No. 1 singles, MSUs Rene-Charles Combette needed nearly three hours to top Techs Scott Schnugg. After dropping the first set 6-4, Combette took the second set 7-5 and used one break to take the third set 6-4.
