A quick look at UGA Football Coach, Mark Richt

Did You Know?
Georgia director of strength and conditioning Dave Van Halanger was the best man in Clemson coach Tommy Bowden's wedding. The two were college teammates at West Virginia under Tommy's father, Bobby Bowden, from 1973-75. When Clemson's Brad Scott left Florida State to become head coach at South Carolina in 1994, then FSU assistant Mark Richt was named offensive coordinator. Richt remained in that role until assuming the top Bulldog post last season.

Georgia-Clemson Storylines
*Clemson is back on the schedule for the first time since 1995 and serves as Georgia's season-opening opponent for the first time since 1982. The rivalry dates back to 1897 with perhaps the most exciting matchups coming between 1977-1987 when the teams had a 5-5-1 record against each other. Nine of those 11 games were decided by a touchdown or less and four were decided in the last 20 seconds.
*How many true freshmen will see action for the Bulldogs? Look for the youngsters to contribute on the defensive line, the secondary, offensive line and backfield.
*How will Georgia's secondary perform after three of its four starters from 2001 were NFL draft picks?

The Georgia-Clemson Series
*Georgia leads 39-17-4 including 25-7-1 in Athens and 19-2 at Sanford Stadium.
*Georgia is 5-2 in season openers versus the Tigers (Last time: 1982: Georgia 13-7)
*The Bulldogs last faced the Tigers in 1995 and Georgia won 19-17 in Clemson
*Current Streak: Georgia won the last three meetings (1991, 1994 and 1995)
*Last Tiger Win: 1990, 34-3 in Clemson *Biggest Georgia Win: 55-0 in 1920 in Athens
*Biggest Georgia Loss: 36-0 in 1902 in Clemson
*Games Decided by 7 Points or Less: 9-7-4
*Last Georgia Shutout: 1978, 12-0 in Athens
*Last Tiger Shutout: 1909, 5-0 in Augusta
*Last Meeting: 1995, Georgia won 19-17 in Clemson behind the running of freshman Torin Kirtsey who was making his first career start. He ran for 195 yard on 38 carries, the most rushes by a Bulldog running back since Herschel Walker in 1982 against Vanderbilt. South Carolina native Brian Smith was 13-for-22 for 156 yards and one touchdown to lead the Bulldog air attack. Clemson finished with 246 yards of total offense with 184 of that coming on the ground. Defenisvely, Georgia's Whit Marshall tallied 15 tackles while Clemson's Leomont Evans collected 18. Also of note, the Tigers wore 1939 throwback uniforms as part of their centennial season celebration.

Bulldogs from the Palmetto State
*Georgia has five players from South Carolina on its roster including senior starting offensive lineman Kevin Breedlove, who graduated from Daniel High School in Clemson. The other Bulldogs include sophomore starting defensive end Robert Geathers (Georgetown), freshman cornerback Tim Jennings (Orangeburg), junior defensive end Jared Noblet (Central) and junior starting tight end Benjamin Watson (Rock Hill). *Clemson starting punter Wynn Kopp is an Athens native and served as Georgia's punter for two seasons (1998-99) before transferring to Clemson.
