ATHENS, Ga. -- The Georgia men's and women's cross country teams enter the 2002 season aiming to increase their standing in the Southeastern Conference, while also improving their status on the national scene. With a mix of talented returnees and highly touted newcomers, the Bulldogs are ready to challenge the top teams in the SEC.
The men's team returns each of its top five runners from a team that finished sixth at both the SEC Championships and the NCAA South Region Championships last year. With a strong base returning and talented new additions, the men's team looks for its best-ever finish in the SEC and possibly its first ever trip to nationals.
"There are a lot of bright spots and it should be a really exciting season," Georgia cross country coach Dan Waters said. "It's just a matter of keeping healthy. We're really excited about this season."
One of the top newcomers on the men's squad is Philip Kiprotich Bett. A transfer from Moi University in Eldoret, Kenya, the junior will be looked upon to not only challenge for the top spot on the team, but also to be in the mix of top runners in the SEC.
