ATHENS, Ga. -- Texas won its third consecutive national championship on Saturday, holding off Stanford at the NCAA Men's Swimming and Diving Championships at the Gabrielsen Natatorium on the University of Georgia campus.

The Longhorns scored 512 points and edged the Cardinal (501) by 11 points in the second-closest NCAAs since the 16-place scoring system was introduced in 1984. That year, Florida beat Texas by 10.5 points. Stanford's 501 points marked the highest total ever for the second-place team.

The host Bulldogs finished 10th with 167 points, their best finish and points total since 1998 when they were seventh with 175.5.

The Longhorns claimed the program's ninth title with a solid showing in the final event, the 400-yard freestyle relay. Leading by 13 points (480-467) going into the relay, the Longhorns' team of Chris Kemp, Tom Hannan, Ryan Ciccarelli and Ian Crocker took third in 2:52.73 for 32 points. Stanford's team of Randall Bal, Peter Marshall, Bobby O'Bryan and Andrew Schnell finished second in 2:51.63 for 34 points, but it was not enough to overcome the Longhorns. California's team of Duje Draganja, Anthony Ervin, Matthew Macedo and Mattias Ohlin won the event in a pool-record 2:50.01.
