Athens, Ga. --- Brian VanGorder, Georgia's defensive coordinator and linebackers coach, has been named one of five finalists for the seventh-annual Broyles Award, given to the nation's top assistant football coach.

VanGorder is in his second season with the Bulldogs. Despite losing six players in the NFL draft from a year ago, Georgia currently ranks 10th in the nation in scoring defense allowing 16.3 points per game and No. 25 in total defense at 320.67 yards per game. The Dogs lead the SEC in red zone defense, with opponents scoring only 58.1 percent of their trips inside the 20-yard line. Georgia's defense has been extremely sting of late. In their last five games -- all versus teams with bowl-eligible records -- the Bulldogs have surrendered only 22 second-half points.

The other finalists, all of whom represent teams ranked in The Associated Press Top 25, are: Norm Chow, offensive coordinator at Southern Cal; Notre Dame defensive coordinator Kent Baer; Ohio State defensive coordinator Mark Dantonio; and Boise State offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach Chris Peterson.
