ATHENS, Ga. -- University of Georgia soccer player Carolyn Cayard was named to the 2002 NSCAA/adidas Scholar All-America First Team, while she and Andrea Velasco were both named to the NSCAA/adidas All-South Region Second Team.
Cayard, a senior defender from Spring, Texas, becomes the first Georgia soccer player to be named a first team academic All-American and the second to earn an academic All-America nod in general. Stefanie Bertcher was named to the NSCAA Academic All-America Second Team in 2000. Cayard started all 20 of Georgia's games in the 2002 season. She scored the winning goal on a penalty kick in Georgia's 1-0 victory over no. 22 Duke earlier in the year.
Velasco, a redshirt junior midfielder from West-Windsor, N.J., scored three goals on the season. She started 19 matches, missing Georgia's SEC opener against due to an ankle injury.
Last season, Cayard was named to the All-South Region Third Team and Velasco was named to the Second Team. Both were named to the All-SEC First Team this season.
