Women's Tennis Team Concludes Fall Season This Week

November 04, 2002 | Women's Tennis

Georgia's fall tournament season ends this week with Agata Cioroch going to the Omni Hotels National Indoors Thursday while the rest of the team will be at the SEC Fall Coaches Classic in Peachtree City, Ga, beginning Friday.

Cioroch, preseason ranked No. 3, is headed to Farmers Branch, Texas after receiving a wildcard into the elite singles field of 32 at the Omni Hotels National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships. Cioroch, who owns a 72-7 career record, received a wildcard into the event last year but was eliminated in the second round.

The Omni Hotels National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships, held at Brookhaven Country Club, are the second of three national championship events during the 2002-03 season. The other two events include the Riviera/ITA Women's All-American held last month (Cioroch advanced to the semifinals) and the season-ending NCAA Championships in May.

Since the tournament began, a Georgia player has made it to the finals in singles and doubles six times. While no Georgia player has ever won the singles title, three have reached the finals (Marissa Catlin in 1999, Angela Lettiere in 1994 and Shannan McCarthy in 1991). However, two Georgia teams have won the doubles (Vanessa Castellano/Marissa Catlin in 1999 and Michelle Anderson/Angela Lettiere in 1994).

The SEC Fall Coaches Classic, slated to take place Nov. 8-11, features several 16-player singles and doubles flights. Six members of Georgia's team will be in the singles while the doubles duos have not been determined as of Monday. This is the only SEC individual tournament of the year as the spring event is a team dual match format.
