ATHENS, Ga.-- University of Georgia women's swimming and diving coach Jack Bauerle announced the signing of Kara Lynn Joyce during the early signing period. Joyce inked a national letter of intent to study and compete at the University next year.

Joyce, who is a senior at Pioneer High School in Ann Arbor, is a high school All-American and was the Michigan state champion and record holder in the 50- and 100-yard freestyle. She also holds the National Public High School record in the 50-yard freestyle. Joyce trains with Club Wolverine under the direction of Jon Urbanchek.

"We could not be more excited to have Kara Lynn as part of our program," said Bauerle. "She is one of the premier swimmers in the country, and I personally feel that she is the best young lady out there for any program. She is a great swimmer but an even better kid. She comes in with a terrific work ethic, and she will be an impact with her individual performances as well as on our relays."

She is a member of the 2002 National Junior Team and finished sixth in the 50-meter freestyle at the 2002 Phillips 66 Summer Nationals after a third-place finish in the same event at the Spring Nationals in 2002. Joyce will represent the United States next year as a member of the 2003 Pan-American team.

Joyce, who stands six-feet tall, was born in Brooklyn and now lives in Ann Arbor, Mich. She is the daughter of Robert and Kathleen Joyce, and she has two older brothers, Sean and Kevin, who are swimmers at Eastern Michigan University.
