Up Next: Omni Hotels South Regional Championships

After taking last weekend off, several members of the Georgia women's tennis team will return to the courts on Wednesday, Oct. 25 in Troy, Ala., to compete in the Omni Hotels South Region Championships.

The three-day event serves as the qualifying tournament for the Omni Hotels National Indoor Championships, which will be held from Nov. 8-10 in Dallas, Texas. Regional singles champions and the runner-ups along with the doubles champion qualify for the national event.

The Omni Hotels National Indoor Championships is the second of three individual national championship events played on the collegiate circuit.

As of Monday, it was still being determined how many Bulldogs would be competing in the regional event. However, junior Agata Cioroch, ranked third nationally, will not be participating as she has already qualified for the national event. Cioroch played in the first national championship event of the fall, the Riviera All-American earlier this month in California and advanced to the semifinals.

Georgia's best showing at the regionals last year came from Cioroch and Lori Grey who advanced to the doubles final as well as the singles semifinal. A trio of Bulldogs including Grey and Anne Nguyen have won the regional singles title in their career. Grey won it as a freshman in the fall of 1999 while Nguyen claimed a share of the title in the fall of 2000 when the final was not played. Shannan McCarthy was the first Georgia player to win the event when she won the 1989 tournament.
