ATHENS---A crowd of more than 300 turned out for a first look at the 2003 Diamond Dogs Friday at Foley Field, and they saw the "Dogs" edge the pesky "Pups" 11-9.
The Pups (newcomers) overcame a slow start to challenge the Dogs (veterans) in a scheduled 10-inning affair. They missed a scoring opportunity in the first, loading the bases with one out. Sophomore Mickey Westphal struck out junior transfer Zeke Parazz (2-for-5) and freshman catcher Jason Jacobs (1-for-2) to end the threat. The Dogs jumped ahead 2-0 in the first off freshman Will Startup, thanks to a two-out, two-run single by sophomore pitcher/designated hitter Jason Fellows.
Westphal and sophomore Bo Lanier blanked the Pups through the first four innings and were helped out by some sterling defensive plays.
