CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. - Georgia men's tennis player Nicolas Boeker won his qualifying match Wednesday to advance to the main draw at the Icy Hot/ITA All-American Championships at the Champions Club in Chattanooga, Tenn.
Boeker defeated Robert Kowalczyk of California in straight-sets, 6-2, 7-5. With the win Boeker earns a spot in the main draw which begins Thursday, Oct. 10. Boeker will face second-seeded Tobias Clemens of UCLA at 11 a.m. Bo Hodge, who received an automatic bid into the main draw, will take on eighth-seeded David Martin of Stanford at 9 a.m.
The two will team up and compete in the doubles portion of the tournament as well. As the No. 4 seed, the Boeker-Hodge duo will face Johan Brunstrom and Henrik Soderberg of Southern Methodist at 5:30 p.m.
This will be Hodge's second appearance in the annual event after reaching the quarterfinals as a freshman in 2000 when the tournament was held at Stone Mountain. He was the only freshman to reach the quarterfinals that year, and his finish was tops for a rookie since Stanford's Ryan Wolters reached the quarterfinals in 1995.
The Icy Hot/ITA Men's All-American Championship is not only the largest single tournament of this season in collegiate tennis, with over 350 competitors (including the qualifying tournaments), but is also the first of three national championship events at the Division I level during the 2002-03 collegiate tennis season (followed by the Omni Hotels/ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships in November and the season-ending NCAA Championships in May).
The tournament continues with singles and doubles play through the weekend, and the finals will take place Oct. 14.
