Team and Individual Scores
p> ATHENS, Ga. - The No. 2 University of Georgia Gym Dogs opened their 2002 campaign with a 196.875-196.35 victory over No. 5 Nebraska in front of 8,306 fans at Stegeman Coliseum in Athens. Georgia's total team score is its highest opening score ever.
"I knew that our score was high, but I did not quite realize it was our highest (opening score) ever," said Georgia coach Suzanne Yoculan. "This team certainly has the ability to put up big numbers. However, I did not expect this to come so quick."
Sophomore Cory Fritzinger of Virginia Beach, Va., the 2001 NCAA vault champion, won the all-around with a 39.525. Her performance was highlighted by a pair of 9.925s on the balance beam and floor exercise. The Gym Dog crowd, which braved the rainy and cold conditions on its way to the meet, saw a few new faces in each event. Kinsey Rowe of Houston, Texas, who missed last season because of a torn ACL, recorded an all-around score of 39.475 in her Gym Dog debut, the highest score ever for a Gym Dog competing in her first meet. Freshman Michelle Emmons of Houston, Texas, competed for the first time on the vault and floor exercise. Senior Talya Vexler and sophomore Loren Simpson competed for the first time on the uneven bars.
