Day One Complete At 2002 Georgia Diving Invitational

The 2002 Georgia Diving Invitational got underway Friday at the Gabrielsen Natatorium. A Tennessee Volunteer took top honors in both springboard events, while Georgia claimed three top-six places on the day.
Tennessee's Jamie Sanger won the women's 1-meter springboard event, while Georgia's Brooke Bassham finished in third. Bassham totaled 260.70 points while Sanger tallied 289.30. Sanger was the only diver to top 300 points in the morning session with a prelim score of 302.40.
The evening session featured the second-annual Bulldog Shootout which is a single elimination event with the top six divers from the women's 1-meter competition. Each round consisted of each diver completing one dive, and the diver with the lowest score did not advance to the next round. Sanger continued to dive well, topping Bassham in the final round.
In the men's 3-meter springboard final, Tennessee's Phillip Jones tallied 554.20 total point to win the event. Jones finished second in both the prelims and semifinals. Georgia's Kris Daugherty took fourth with 500.50 points while freshman Todd Avery improved on his eighth-place standing after semifinals to come in sixth in the finals with 479.20 points.
The 2002 Georgia Diving Invitational will continue through Sunday. Saturday morning prelims begin at 11 a.m. with the men's 1-meter and women's 3-meter competition, while the finals are slated for 6 p.m.
