ATHENS-----For the fourth time in tournament history, the Georgia Invitational will feature an all-Georgia final.
Georgia's Agata Cioroch and Anne Nguyen won two matches apiece Sunday to advance to Monday's 10 am final. It will be the first all-Georgia final since 1999. Admission is free.
Nguyen, the third seed, began the day with a 7-5, 6-4 win over seventh seeded Karem Harboe (Ole Miss). She moved in to the final by upsetting the top seed, Tonya Grib (Brenau) 7-6(6), 6-3. The last two years of this event, Grib, the nation's top-ranked NAIA player, had eliminated Nguyen including in the semifinals last year. However, Nguyen took the first set in a tiebreaker, then fell behind an early break in the second. She got it back to go up 3-2 and then later broke her again to serve for the match at 5-3. After trailing love 40, she rallied back and on her second match point, Nguyen ousted Grib.
"It's great to see Anne make improvements in her game, said Georgia head coach Jeff Wallace. "She played smart, she played hard and good things happen when you put those two ingredients together. Agata has had a solid tournament too. It should be a great final."
Cioroch, seeded second, eliminated Brenau's Billjana Dimovska 6-3, 6-1 in the quarterfinals and then quickly dispatched Zsofia Golopencza (Armstrong State) 6-3, 6-0 to advance to the finals.
