Sept. 23, 2001

ATHENS, Ga.-- Georgia will have one representative playing Monday at the 2001 Southern Collegiate Championships at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex in Athens. Brandon Wagner topped ninth-seeded Xavier Luscan of Florida State in Sunday's quarterfinals and will face top-seeded Michael Kogan from Tulane in Monday's semifinals at 9:30 a.m.

Wagner, who is the fourth seed in the Division I singles draw, lost his first two service games and fell behind 3-0 in the first set to Luscan in their quarterfinal match. Wagner won three of the next four games to get the set back on serve at 4-3. Both men held, forcing a first-set tiebreak. Wagner lost four of the first six points and faced a pair of set points, trailing 6-4, but the junior from Tampa, Fla., reeled off four straight points to take the first set 7-6 (6).

Wagner took that momentum into the second set, taking a 3-1 lead. A break by the Seminole evened the issue 3-3, and both men held to knot the score at 4-4. Neither player could maintain serve of the next three games, leaving Wagner with a 6-5 advantage and serving for the match. Cramps forced Luscan to retire, sending Wagner into Monday's semifinals.
