ATHENS, Ga. - Nikki Eason, a 5-6, guard from JL Mann High School in Greenville, S.C., signed a letter-of-intent to compete collegiately for the University of Georgia Lady Bulldogs on Monday, head coach Andy Landers announced.
"In light of 'Tweety's' decision to go to the WNBA and injuries to key backcourt players, we thought we needed help at guard," Landers said. "We feel fortunate there was a player of Nikki's caliber out there for us. She brings many point guard skills to our program -- among others, excellent quickness, strength and defensive abilities."
Two weeks ago, Deanna "Tweety" Nolan opted for bypass a potential fourth year of playing eligibility and enter the WNBA draft, where she was the No. 6 overall pick by the Detroit Shock. Returning guards Camille Murphy and Nicole Kaczmarski have been hindered by knee and foot injuries, respectively.
Eason was a first-team Class AAA All-State selection by state coaches this spring after leading Mann to a 25-5 record and a runner-up finish in the Upper-State Tournament. Eason averaged 15.1 points, 4.3 rebounds, 7.8 assists and 5.0 steals as a senior. She was named 2001 Peach Blossom Region Player of the Year and was named All-Region for a third straight season. As both a junior and senior, Eason also was chosen to Greenville's All-County team and her team's Most Valuable Player.
