ATHENS, Ga. -- The University of Georgia track and field team signed local talent Rodney Almond as announced by head coach Wayne Norton Tuesday.
Almond, currently a senior at Cedar Shoals High School in Athens, won the 4A state title in the 400 meter dash in 2001. He also won the Charlie Belcher All-Classification Trophy for his time of 47.23 in the event at the state meet. Almond was named to the Athens Banner Herald and Pepsi All-Northeast Georgia Track Team in the 200 and 400 meter dashes.
"Rodney is the best 400 runner in the state of Georgia and one of the best in the southeast," Norton said. "(UGA assistant) coach Jon Stuart and I have had him high on our list since July 1st, so it is satisfying to finally get him signed. He's a fine young man and should fit in well as a student-athlete at the University of Georgia. He is a versatile sprinter who can run the 400, 200, 4x100, and 4x400."
