SANTE FE, Argentina -- University of Georgia freshman Trevor Snyder won the gold medal in the javelin Thursday at the 2001 Pan-American Junior Championships. Snyder, competing for Canada, recorded a mark of 243' (74.06 meters), a new career-best and third best on Georgia's all-time javelin list.

The Windsor, Ontario, native joined the UGA track and field squad this fall. Snyder is a three-time Canadian junior champion and the Canadian high school record holder in the javelin.

"It's exciting for us to have a person who's just coming in as a freshman to be a proven champion and already be performing at a very high level," Georgia head track and field coach Wayne Norton said. "That really gives us a lot of confidence in what he's going to be able to do for us this year and in the future."

"That was a great throw for this time of year," added Georgia throws coach Don Babbitt. "Especially in a major competition in a far away place like Argentina. It bodes well for big throws and big performances in the spring."
