Game One Recap: Troy Beats No. 18 Duke 6-0

In the opening game of the Athens Regional it was the third seeded Troy Trojans (42-19) outlasting the second seeded Duke Blue Devils 6-0. The Trojans jumped on Blue Devil starter Ryan Day breaking the scoreless tie in the top of the third inning. A bases loaded double by Joey Denison cleared the bags, and with two outs Brody Binder lined a double of his own down the third base line giving the Trojans a 4-0 advantage. Denison extended the Trojan lead to 5-0 in the fourth with a one out single, his fourth RBI of the game.
With inclement weather in the area, play was suspended in the bottom of the fifth inning delaying the contest five hours and twenty-five minutes. The Trojans continued to add-on after the weather delay in the sixth, manufacturing another run after loading the bases, increasing the visitors' lead to six. After Trojan starter Andrew Crane left the game due to cramping, reliever Corey Childress dominated in relief striking out a career high nine men in six innings of relief preserving the Troy shutout, 6-0.
Troy Head Coach Mark SmarttÂ
On the Opening Win
"I am certainly proud of the win. I think that in order to have success you have to start 1-0. It was a unique game, the two biggest things in the game were the three-run-double in the third by Joey Denison to give us the lead and then the odd situation with Andrew Crane cramping up and leaving the game. We handed the ball off to Corey Childress with no warning and he went out, got three strikeouts and then we hade the lightening delay that turned into a significant delay. Childress has thrown as good as he's thrown his entire career, today he was special. It was a solid 6-0 win, we still have a long way to go but we're excited to start off with a 1-0 win."
