Georgia Completes Sweep Of Clemson

April 17, 2018 | Baseball

ATHENS, Ga. --- The 19th ranked Georgia Bulldogs completed the season series sweep of the 15th ranked Clemson Tigers for the first time since 2015, winning Tuesday at Foley Field 6-1.

In his first career start on the mound sophomore right hander Will Proctor turned in a career high four innings allowing just one run, a solo home run by Tiger shortstop Logan Davidson to lead off the game. Proctor improved to 3-2 while Tiger starter Travis Marr dropped to 3-1.

The Bulldogs (26-11) responded to the Clemson solo shot with four runs of their own in the bottom of the first inning. With two men on and two outs, sophomore third baseman Aaron Schunk laced a triple just beyond the reach of the diving Tiger right fielder Seth Beer clearing the bases giving Georgia a two-run lead. Then, Adam Sasser followed with an opposite field two-run home run to left, his fourth of the season, giving the Bulldogs a 4-1 lead.

Georgia would continue their hot hitting with solo runs in the second and third inning. A double by Tucker Bradley scored Ivan Johnson from first to make it 5-1, and a sacrifice fly by Schunk in the third extended the lead to 6-1.

Tony Locey, Kevin Smith and Zac Kristofak combined for five shutout innings of relief as the Bulldogs closed out the Tigers (26-11) for their 10th straight non-conference win.

Coach's Corner
Ike Cousins Head Baseball Coach Scott Stricklin
On the game...
"Between Will Proctor, Tony Locey, and Kevin Smith we were thinking let's get six and go from there. And between Locey and Proctor they gave us seven. Those guys were really good I thought Tony was great, Kevin Smith got us a couple outs, and Zac Kristofak threw the ball as well as he's thrown all year."

Player's Perspective
Sophomore Starting Pitcher Will Proctor

On picking up a big non-conference win…

"To be able to not only put away the smaller schools but bigger schools like Clemson, that's giant. I got a text from Coach Kenny yesterday morning that I was starting and  I was pretty stoked."
