Bulldogs Beat The Citadel 9-4

CHARLESTON, S.C.---Redshirt freshman catcher Mason Meadows smashed a grand slam to lead Georgia to a 9-4 win over The Citadel Tuesday at Riley Park.

With the victory, the Bulldogs (8-5) snapped a four-game losing streak while The Citadel dropped to 5-6. The Citadel jumped ahead 1-0 with back-to-back doubles in the bottom of the first. Georgia tied the game in the second inning after Aaron Schunk extended his hitting streak to eight games with a base hit, took second on a single by LJ Talley and then a run-scoring single by Meadows. In the third, Georgia sent eight men to the plate and built a 4-1 advantage. Junior Adam Sasser provided a two-run single and another run scored on a wild pitch.

Georgia junior Kevin Smith struck out five over 2.1 innings of relief to earn the win and improve to 2-1. Citadel starter Devin Beckley dropped to 0-1, allowing four runs on six hits in 2.2 innings. Georgia sophomore Tony Locey started and went four innings and gave up two runs on six hits with three walks and four strikeouts.

The Bulldogs led 5-2 in the sixth inning when William Kinney lined a ball down the left field line that was ruled a two-run home run to make it a one-run contest. Georgia responded with a four-run outburst an inning later. Schunk provided 2.2 innings of scoreless relief with four strikeouts in his debut on the mound.

The Bulldogs return to action Friday when they start a three-game series at Foley Field against Toledo. First pitch Friday will be at 6:02 p.m. (SECN+).

--Redshirt freshman Mason Meadows (2-for-5, 5 RBI) delivered an RBI-single to make it 1-1 in the second inning, and then for his first career home run, he smashed a grand slam in the seventh to make it 9-4 Bulldogs.
-Sophomore Aaron Schunk (2-for-4) extended his hitting streak to eight games with a single in the second inning. Also, he saw his first action on the mound, tossing the final 2.2 innings with four strikeouts.
-For the second straight day, junior Adam Sasser (2-for-5, 3 RBI) tied his career high with a 3 RBI-game.
-The Bulldogs tallied 15 hits Tuesday, 14 singles and a grand slam.

"This was a much-needed win especially after the way last night ended. That's a good thing about baseball is you don't have to wait to long to play again, and in our case, we had another game to play the very next day. I like how the team responded tonight. We were hard on them last night after the way we played, and they came out today, faced some adversity and got the victory. Mason had the big home run but everybody contributed tonight."
