Bulldogs Hold Fourth Spring Practice

March 27, 2018 | Football

ATHENS, Ga. --- The Georgia football team held its fourth practice of the spring on Tuesday afternoon on the Woodruff Practice Fields.

Wearing full pads, the Bulldogs went through approximately two hours of drills. Tuesday marked the fourth of 15 spring practices for Georgia, including the annual G-Day intrasquad scrimmage on Saturday, April 21.

Charlie Woerner, who is entering his junior year, was asked about having Georgia offensive coordinator Jim Chaney now serving as the tight ends coach. Last season, Woerner and his fellow tight ends had 20 catches for 245 yards and two touchdowns.

"Coach Chaney is the offensive coordinator, so he knows the offense inside and out better than anyone ever could," Woerner said. "Being in the room with him and seeing how he calls plays, we're able to get inside his head. It's getting our minds more like the quarterbacks, thinking like he would. It's definitely the anticipation in the room that we can get the ball a little more. Maybe we can sweet talk him into that."

Offensive tackle Andrew Thomas is also making adjustments. A 15-game starter at right tackle as a true freshman, he has shifted to the left side for spring drills.

"(Offensive line coach Sam Pittman) and I actually talked about it late in the season last year," the 6-foot-5, 320-pounder said. "I took some reps with the third and fourth team. The transition has been smooth so far. I just come in everyday ready to work. The mental aspect is the biggest difference. The plays are the same, but everything's flipped, so I'm mainly focusing on my footwork right now."

ESPN will televise the G-Day game in Sanford Stadium starting at 4 p.m. The Red team will face off versus the Black team and admission is free to the annual showdown. Prior to the G-Day matchup, lettermen from the program's past will square off on the field starting at 1:15 p.m.  At halftime, fans attending G-Day will be introduced to UGA's incoming class of 2018 signees.

With expected high demand and temporarily reduced seating due to the construction on the new West End Zone complex, the UGA Athletic Association will be implementing a pass system.  Upon entrance, each fan will receive a commemorative pass with a seating section. The UGAAA asks that each fan sits in this section to help manage what is expected to be a near-capacity crowd. Gates 2-9 will be open as usual.  However, Gate 10 (gate under the bridge next to the Tate Center) will be closed due to construction. To help reduce congestion and further improve ingress flow, please enter on the side of the stadium where each fan's preferred seating location would be.  Additional pass/entry questions can be directed to facilitysupport@sports.uga.edu.

The Bulldogs will begin their 2018 campaign with a home matchup against Austin Peay on Saturday, Sept. 1. Georgia will travel to Columbia, S.C., to open its Southeastern Conference schedule against South Carolina on Sept. 8.
