March 18, 2018 | Men's Tennis
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – With the match knotted at three, the Arkansas Razorbacks took the deciding point on the third court for the 4-3 final against the 14th Georgia Bulldog men's tennis team at the Billingsley Tennis Center on Sunday afternoon.
Georgia (8-6, 1-4) secured an early lead in doubles, fueled by the Bulldogs' first and second courts. The junior pair of Walker Duncan and Jan Zielinski sealed a 6-2 frame against Jose Salazar and Howard-Tripp, before the Nathan Ponwith-Wayne Montgomery tandem made the doubles point official with a 6-1 showing on the second court.
In singles, No. 47 Zielinski captured his 11th win in the past 12 completed contests, topping Josh Howard-Tripp on the fourth court with a 6-4, 6-2 straight-set victory for the 2-0 Bulldog advantage.
Alex Reco put Arkansas (9-8, 2-4) on the board, needing a 7-5 second-set tiebreaker to best Alex Diaz on the sixth court, but No. 24 Montgomery responded with a 6-4, 7-5 victory on the second court against Adam Sanurjo to hand Georgia the 3-1 margin.
Arkansas came back with three consecutive singles wins on the first, fifth and third courts. No. 84 Jose Salazar and Pedro Alonso needed three sets apiece to overtake No. 47 Emil Reinberg and Robert Loeb, respectively, bringing the final point down to No. 81 Nathan Ponwith and Oscar Mesquida on the third court.
In the first set, Mesquida fought to an 11-9 tiebreaker, but Ponwith returned in the second set, winning 6-3. Mesquida outlasted Ponwith in the final frame, 6-2, to finalize the 4-3 match in favor of Arkansas.
