Grand Slams Glide Bulldogs Past Owls, 15-3

Highlights

Interviews

ATHENS, Ga. – Grand slams in consecutive innings by Cam Shepherd and Michael Curry powered the Georgia baseball team to a 15-3 win against the Kennesaw State Owls Tuesday evening at Foley Field.

The two-grand slam game marked Georgia's fourth in program history and first since Rich Poythress and Matt Cerione did so in the eighth inning versus Ohio State at the Tallahassee NCAA Regional on May 29, 2009.

Aside from the eight runs off two hits, the Bulldogs plated seven other runs. Prior to Shepherd's long ball in the second inning, consecutive two-out infield singles, one of which was a bunt, followed by a walk, scored the first three runs that equalized the Owl's top of the frame output.

Similarly in the third, Georgia filled the bases before LJ Talley singled in a run, Tucker Bradley hit a sacrifice fly, and Shepherd walked. In the following at-bat, Curry hit the batter's eye in straight away center field for the commanding 14-3 lead.

Adam Sasser tacked on a solo shot in the fourth for his second homer of the season.

Earning the win on the mound, Tony Locey (2-0) threw five innings, striking out a career-high eight batters, while surrendering three runs on three hits with two walks. Out of the pen, Tim Elliot, Adam Goodman, Blake Cairnes, and Zac Kristofak each tossed single scoreless innings to close out the game.

Dawg Tracks
-A second inning single extended Aaron Schunk's team-high hit streak to 12 games, marking a new career-best stretch for the sophomore.
- Shepherd's second-inning grand slam was a career-first for the sophomore. Curry's third-inning grand slam was his second of the year and Georgia's fourth.
-The five-RBI game is Shepherd's first of the season over three RBIs and just the second time he has reached at least four. His career-high is six vs. Xavier last season.
-Georgia now leads the series with Kennesaw State, 13-10. The 14-4 win earlier this season paired with this evening's 15-3 win marks Georgia's two largest win margins in the series' history.

Coach's Corner
Ike Cousins Head Baseball Coach Scott Stricklin
On the offensive production...
"It was really good to see Cam [Shepherd] swing the bat like that. His bat looked a little bit different in batting practice today; he's recovering from strep throat. He's just been a little off these last few games. I thought in batting practice he had a little more pop in his bat. Great to see Michael Curry barrel up three balls and have those three great at-bats. All in all, I thought we swung the bat well, and I think it was complete game by us."

On a complete win...
"Tony gave us a positive start, and the guys out of the pen did a good job. I thought Timmy Elliott threw the ball really good, and that's what we needed. He had a meeting with Coach Kenney the other day, and they just talked about what he needs to do and what he wants to do and make sure those things match up. I thought Tim was really good, and Adam Goodman, it was really positive to see him through the ball like that. (Blake) Cairnes, he wan't quite there, but he got himself out of a jam, and (Zac) Kristofak, that's as good as he's thrown here. I thought on the mound, we were really good. Defensively, turned some double plays and made some really good plays. Offensively, I think we were 6-for-10 with runners in scoring position. You do that, you're going to win a lot of games."

Player's Perspective
Sophomore Shortstop #7 Cam Shepherd
On scoring 15 runs in the mid-week contest going into SEC play this weekend...
"It gives us a little momentum going into this weekend. We've been playing with a lot of confidence this year, and I think it's shown on the field. Whatever happens, we know we're going to bounce back. It was good to get 15 runs going into next weekend – we'll have a lot of confidence going into it."
